Haromyia, a new genus of long-legged flies from Dominica (Diptera: Dolichopodidae).
The new micro-dolichopodid genus Haromyia gen. nov. and the type species H. iviei sp. nov. are described from the island of Dominica in the Lesser Antilles. Males and females of Haromyia are distinguished by the large setae on a bulging clypeus, minute size, and wing veins that are nearly straight and evenly diverging from wing base. Haromyia does not fit readily into any contemporary dolichopo...
متن کاملJumping from the surface of water by the long-legged fly Hydrophorus (Diptera, Dolichopodidae).
The fly Hydrophorus alboflorens (4 mm long, 4.7 mg mass) moves around upon and jumps from water without its tarsi penetrating the surface. All six tarsi have a surface area of 1.3 mm(-2) in contact with the water, but they did not dimple its surface when standing. Jumping was propelled by depression of the trochantera of both hind and middle legs, which are 40% longer than the front legs and 17...

Eighteen species of long-legged flies (Dolichopodidae) are reported as new to Finland. A further species, Microphorellapraecox (Loew), is confirmed as a Finnish species. The status of Hydrophoruscallosoma Frey, 1915 is re-evaluated and a lectotype is designated for the species. Monthly population fluctuations of carrion-frequenting blow-flies over a 24-month period were monitored using 2 carrion-baited traps in the southern Kruger National Park (KNP) and 3 in the northern KNP. All species displayed a clear seasonality. Chrysomyia marginalis and Chrysomyia albiceps were by far the most abundant. C. marginalis attained maximum abundance between November and March, with ...

Pseudoparaclius udzungwa sp. nov. is described from Udzungwa Mountains National Park, Tanzania, and a key to all known Afrotropical species of Pseudoparaclius Grichanov is provided. Pseudoparaclius udzungwa is morphologically very similar to P. sanjensis (Grichanov) but has a modified male fore tarsus with laterally compressed tarsomeres 4-5, an epandrium with slightly shorter marginal teeth di...
